This is the second book compiled from the proceedings of “Civic Consciousness and Citizenship in Taiwan” conference series held over the years by the Center for Political Thought, RCHSS. We apply both normative and empirical research approaches to examine significant political issues of the year in Taiwanese society in an attempt to understand public opinion and the state of civic consciousness. Civic consciousness, as well as civil and political liberty are crucial to a thriving democracy. As Thomas Jefferson once said: “If once the people become inattentive to the public affairs, you and I, and Congress and Assemblies, Judges and Governors, shall all become wolves. It seems to be the law of our general nature, in spite of individual exceptions.” Inspired by a similar public spirit, we produced this volume, collecting outstanding studies which address issues such as land justice, housing justice, educational justice, and intergenerational justice from our conference series “Civic Consciousness and Citizenship in Taiwan.”
